Artificial Intelligence has seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, transformed how we work and how we interact with technology. Last year there was a sudden boom of AI tools including ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Jasper that now sees more than 180 million users globally.
One of Cohort Innovation Space’s first members, Datarwe has been at the forefront of AI technology since 2019. This Queensland-based tech start-up, in partnership with KJR, an Australian software quality engineering consultancy specialised in software testing and AI implementation, aims to revolutionise global healthcare through its clinical data-sharing platform. Strengthened by $1.5 million in funding from the Queensland Government, Datarwe is a leader in clinical data activation for the development of safe and effective AI-enabled tools for healthcare.
To understand the current impact of AI, we spoke with the Datarwe and KJR teams, who shared five Australian examples of how AI is transforming our world right now.
1. AI in Healthcare: Revolutionising Patient Care
AI is revolutionising healthcare by improving diagnostics, personalising treatment plans, and streamlining administrative tasks. For instance, AI algorithms can analyse medical images with high accuracy, aiding in early disease detection. Healthcare providers, such as The Royal Melbourne Hopsital, are adopting AI to predict patient outcomes and optimise treatment strategies, enhancing patient care and operational efficiency.
2. Autonomous Vehicles: Redefining Transportation
Self-driving cars are one of the most prominent examples of AI in action. Companies like Tesla and Australian/American startup Zoox are at the forefront of developing autonomous vehicles. These technologies promise safer roads, reduced traffic congestion, and greater accessibility for people with disabilities. The future of transportation is set to be transformed with AI-powered vehicles navigating our streets.
3. Financial Services: Enhancing Security and Personalisation
AI and ML are pivotal in the financial sector, where they help detect fraudulent activities, manage risk, and personalise banking experiences. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia uses AI to monitor transactions and identify unusual activities, preventing fraud and ensuring customer security. AI-driven chatbots and personalised financial advice are also becoming commonplace, enhancing customer service and satisfaction.
4. Retail: Creating Personalised Shopping Experiences
Retailers are leveraging AI to create more personalised shopping experiences. AI algorithms analyse customer behaviour, preferences, and purchase history to recommend products. Australian retailer The Iconic employs AI to offer personalised product suggestions, enhancing the shopping experience and driving sales.
5. Education: Personalised Learning Pathways
Educational institutions are adopting AI to create personalised learning experiences. The University of Sydney uses AI to tailor educational content to individual learning styles and progress, enhancing the overall learning experience. AI-powered tools offer personalised tutoring, assessment, and feedback, supporting students in achieving their academic goals.
As AI and ML continue to evolve and reshape our daily lives these technologies come with challenges, such as biases in AI systems, the “black box” problem of decision transparency, and concerns about data privacy and security.
