National Science Week 2021

We will be joined by speakers Professor Carolyn Mountford who will provide insights into her world-leading work and research on magnetic resonance technology, and Dr Hal Rice, who will speak about the technological advancements he is leading in regards to neurovascular intervention and his work with the Corindus neurovascular robot.

SPEAKERS:

Prof. Carolyn Mountford

Professor Carolyn Mountford is a world leader in the development of magnetic resonance technology and current Principal Researcher at the Institute for Glycomics. Carolyn’s team has been a worldwide development site for Siemens since 1999. Throughout her career, including a role as the Professor in Radiology at Harvard Medical School, and the former CEO and Director of Research for the Translational Research Institute, Mountford has secured approximately $39 million in funding, has co-authored more than 180 peer-review articles and holds five significant patents.

Carolyn is currently working with the United States and Australian military on a new in vivo MR approach that can detect changes to brain chemistry and may lead to new therapies for brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. Hal Rice

Dr Hal Rice has worked as a diagnostic and interventional neuro-radiologist in the Gold Coast Hospital since 2003, establishing the interventional neuro-radiology service at the Gold Coast Hospital which is now regarded as one of the premier sites in Australia for the endovascular treatment of life threatening brain aneurisms and acute ischemic stroke.

Dr Rice, who is one of eight interventionalist in Queensland, recently performed a world-first procedure using the Corindus neurovascular robot which is currently being trialled at the hospital for treating patients with complex brain aneurysms. Dr Rice is also one of the city’s largest private employers with around 320 staff across 22 practices in south east Queensland. Across the board, the clinics provide services to 430,000 people every year.
